Letter to the editor,
Castlegar News,
October 7/2010
After nearly twenty years in Castlegar at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre, I will now be embracing new horizons. The years in Castlegar has been a major slice with many highs and lows, and one of my most productive working periods.
There were many highlights along the way; three HSMBC designations, major exhibits with the assistance of BC Arts Council, Vancouver Foundation and Columbia Basin Trust [primarily] along with major web site development and on line exhibits. There was a half a million dollar infrastructure grant which enabled us to build the market building, barn, irrigation and well system. There were other infrastructure improvements such as implement restoration, shake replacement, porch rebuilding etc.
I am grateful to those institutions and individuals who shared my vision and worked with me on many of these projects and in particular, I give full credit to the supportive Board of Directors of the Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society. Ron Mahonin was an exemplary collaborator in many of these projects.
The City of Castlegar has also been instrumental in the success of the Centre and I am grateful for our harmonious working relationship.
I am happy to leave the Centre in a better condition than I found it and I leave with the anticipation that the standards we have set will be maintained with continuing diligence and attention paid to our heritage and history. I wish all success to the Centre.
I will continue my interest and work in matters historic, albeit in not so dedicated a full time fashion.
